Its a state of mind.
Munch is an artist that understood suffering. Suffering in the round. His depictions of suffering are unfamiliar for their raw truth. There is a sanity to them, to the full sighted acknowledgement of the extremes of human anguish. His mastery of the expression of pain, loss, terror and existential horror has transcendent qualities.
His gift is to evoke the the depth of feeling from the point of suffering but also shows the viewer the point beyond it. The artist’s absence of denial and his refusal to hide or shrink from the absolute worst in life gives his paintings a divine aspect. I turn to art for sustenance to see the truth laid bare and when it is, I see that there exists the real beauty.
Munch’s painting of the Madonna provided the inspiration for this.
